Auditions for the 2008-2000 Season

Introduction

We welcome your interest in the University of Illinois Orchestra Program and know you will find your participation rewarding no matter your major or level of experience. An audition is required for admission to any University of Illinois orchestra. However, all string players who audition will be placed in one of the three orchestras.

Audition Materials

What a student plays for his/her audition depends on her/his major.

1. Those students whose major is other than music who wish to play in Philharmonia or Illini Orchestra will play 4-5 minutes of a piece or pieces of their choice that best demonstrates their performance level. (A 4-5-minute section from a longer work is also acceptable.)
2. Orchestral audition excerpts must be prepared and played by:
   
   1. all music majors (composition, music education, applied performance, and theory specialties);
   2. students who are not music majors but who wish first to be considered for the Symphony Orchestra

Audition Procedures

1. All students should arrive for their audition at least 15 minutes early.
2. Audition check-in will be in the Orchestra Office, Krannert Center, Level 2, Room 403. After checking in, an orchestra staff member will guide you to a warm-up room and to the appropriate audition location.
3. Committee members will inform students at the audtition which excerpts to play. You will not play all the assigned excerpts.
4. Students playing excerpts:
• will present their auditions from behind a screen.
• will be audio taped as the basis for evaluative comments from members of the adjudication committee, if requested by student.
5. String players whose major is not music auditioning for University Philharmonia or Illini Orchestra will audition in the Orchestra Department Office.

Audition Schedule and Signup

1. Auditions will be during the week of August 24-29. Schedule your audition on-line according to your major and the group for which you are auditioning. Be sure you select the correct link. A reminder will be emailed to you the day before your audition.

• Schedule Audition using Prescribed Excerpts: required for all music majors and students of other majors who want first to be considered for the U of I Symphony.
• Schedule Audition using Student-Selected Piece: only for student students who are NOT music majors for placement in U of I Philharmonia or Illini Orchestra.

Audition Followup

1. Audition results will be posted on this website
   1. Strings on Sunday, August 31, if not sooner
   2. Winds and Percussion on Wednesday, August 27
2. Rehearsals begin at 3:00, Monday, September 2 for the Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonia; and at 4:00, Tuesday for the Illini Orchestra.
